It's also a film that literally begins with failure, setting the themes for an unusually quiet and delicate piece of plotless beauty. Showcasing a proud dinosaur couple awaiting the hatching of their three eggs, the viewer witnesses the birth of the first two young dinosaurs, but the third, surrounded by a massive egg shell, doesn't even break out until his brother comes along and knocks the shell with a stick.
This sure looks great, but I distracted myself pretty badly trying to figure out just how a bunch of giant lizards with no tools or thumbs developed an agrarian society.
This is the kind of practical stuff that cartoon premises ignore all the time and with good cause, kids don't care but that drives my faulty brain totally up the wall with questions.
At one point a tyrannosaur is playing a bug like a harmonica sure, fine and then when he's done he just eats it. This made me think of Wilma Flintstone butchering the record player for dinner, and that got me really wound up.

Set in an alternate timeline in which the asteroid that destroyed the dinosaurs missed Earth, The…. The Good Dinosaur has gorgeous animation and moments of creativity, but the derivative, lightweight story deprives it of the opportunity to be considered anywhere near the level of Pixar's finest works.
Watchable, but very unremarkable. The Good Dinosaur, just like the name suggests, is surely on the 'good' and rather safe side on the entirety of the Pixar animation spectrum of films, though I did quite enjoy this much more than the lengthy line of not so sweet reviews throughout the interwebs.
It is definitely the weakest out of the entire Pixar films I've seen so far, with some of the story throughout being a little iffy, but I can't lie to you all that I absolutely enjoyed the friendship relationship between Arlo and Spot, and it hits hard in the end once their journey is finally complete.
The animation was also another thing I appreciate as well with there being many beautiful shots throughout the film. Much like Brave had an amazing score, The Good Dinosaur 's visuals are truly spectacular Peter Sohn's "The Good Dinosaur" takes some time to find its footing.
Beginning seemingly as technical exercise in wedding photo-real animated landscapes with cartoony characters, PIXAR's adventure is light on the narrative and the emotion but heavy on the gee-wiz, computer-generated beauty.
It may be nice to look at, but there is nothing beyond its aesthetic grandeur to inspire any true interest.
Somewhere around the film's mid-point, however, the adventure finds its narrative hook and its thematic and emotional center.
What was a recognizable and too-straightforward story of a young apatosaurus attempting to make his family proud becomes a compelling journey where fear is overcome, unexpected friendships are born, and loss becomes fuel not something that destroys.
Moreover, the film…. This was a relatively straightforward Pixar movie with lessons similar to those found in other works from the studio.
The animation is pretty great at some parts, and a lot of the supporting characters were very entertaining.

Beautiful surroundings doesn't make a movie good, but it certainly helps craft your opinion on one. For the most part the movie is pretty boring to me, but it has some good moments here and there with decent characters.
