I walked into "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" with almost no knowledge of Larsson's novel or the Swedish film made a few years before David Fincher's version.
The end result is ultimately an extremely satisfying, brutal, and complex thriller thanks to great direction by Fincher known greatly for his work on "Seven," "The Game," and "The Social Network" , excellent writing, and an impeccably chosen cast.
After only a few years, the character of Lisbeth Salander has become an attention-grabbing heroine that is as iconic as Edward Cullen of the love-it-or-hate-it "Twilight" series.
And we can understand why. After all the truly awful and hideous things that have plagued her life, Lisbeth doesn't take any crap from anybody.
She may be angry, violent, overtly sexual, demanding, and perhaps a little crazy, but she is a genius at what she does, and has reasons for all of her actions, no matter how gruesome they may be.
The mystery surrounding the film is sophisticated and white-knuckling, adding to the intensity and mood of the story and its characters. We're not sure of who is Harriet's killer, or if Harriet is even dead, until the last half hour of the film, and when we do find out the twist, it leaves a stupendous impact.
After cementing his reputation in brutal crime thrillers, and surprising us with "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "The Social Network," David Fincher was the right man for the director's chair.
Every film he makes, even a drama like "The Social Network," sets up a tone of genuine suspense, tension, and fear for the characters.
Of all of the people they could have chosen to play these roles, the casting director landed in a pot of gold. Daniel Craig does a wonderful job as Mikael, showing us that he can play characters other than James Bond.
With the amount of screen time she has, Robin Wright is also very good as Blomkvist's business partner Erika Berger. The person to really watch out for, however, is Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander.
Getting her big break in the underrated remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and later starring in Fincher's previous film "The Social Network" giving a dynamite performance in the opening scene , Mara has sealed her future with many more promising and exciting roles because of her portrayal of Lisbeth.
This is not an easy role to play, knowing that Mara is the second person to play the character. She must endure two shocking rape scenes and a torture sequence, and there is a hefty amount of nudity involved.
Mara embodies Lisbeth, immediately bringing immense intimidation, danger, and fury every time she comes on to the screen.
Her eyes are wide and emotionless, almost as if you can see right through her. And with everything that has happened to the character, we understand that Lisbeth has a right to be that way.
She may be smart, but she is not interested in attraction or friendships with another human being. Overall, Mara gives a sensational, fearless, dedicated, and electrifying performance that guarantees an Oscar nod.
Being released during the cheery time of the holidays, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is not a feel-good film, by any means.
It is a harsh, gritty, and rough cinema trip that answers the question of leaving the kids at home with the babysitter.
Also, if you're squeamish, you will not like it. However, those who have read the book, and those who have not read it, should check it out.
Even without having read Larsson's novel, I left the theater completely satisfied. It is a movie experience that you don't commonly get.

Noomi gets both her anger and vulnerability right. The story allows us to learn about her in the everyday world navigating her traumas and surviving with them going untreated.
Her anger and inner strength are shown in many ways. She finds an effective manner to thank him for his kindness.
She helps a crusading journalist who appreciates her for the right reasons and they form a effective but terse working and of course mandatory sexual relationship which is the heart of this story.
The strength of this story and of this movie is showing how damaged Lisbeth really is. They got it perfect choosing Noomi as Lisbeth and like the new Bond movies or the Bourne movies made them a cohesive experience.
Lisbeth is a tragic figure but you end up loving her. If you don't find yourself totally rooting for Mikael and Lisbeth by the time this story gets rolling, you're missing a chip!
I have to say, the style of this movie drew me right in, and the wife and I watched it all over again the following night!
Mikael and Lisbeth are unlikely partners, that prove to be oddly charismatic and unstoppable! Their efforts ultimately uncover the presence of a soulless serial killer, living right in their midst.
This story rocks! It's an original work with fine acting and great story telling! This is an annual watch for me now!

I didn't even mind the English subtitles and after awhile I didn't need them. Lisbeth's character is so much more believeable, a bit warmer than the American version.
I wasn't as squeamish about the abuse, the rape, or the methods of murder because I knew the outcome would almost be a happy ending. I gave 4 stars.
Now, hoping the Swedish versions of the other 2 novels by Larsen are on Amazon Prime as well! This has become my favorite, by far. It's graphic scenes may be a bit strong for some, but makes for a more realistic depiction of the content.

In my opinion, 'The Girl is the Dragon Tattoo' movie is a darkly gripping adaption of the book. It successfully captures Larsson's low opinion of contemporary Swedish Society.
His favourite themes are all portrayed in the film in a way that spares no one's feelings. These are violence against women, the incompetence and cowardice of investigative journalists and the moral bankruptcy of capitalism.
There is also a strong emphasis of the virulent Nazism that he perceives as still festering away at the heart of the country. Larsson may have a point; it is worth bearing in mind that Swedes served under German officers in the Nordland Regiment of the notorious 5th SS Panzer division during World War 2.
Recommended but be aware that there are some very nasty scenes indeed, particularly of a sexual sadistic nature.
I came to the book rather late in the day and, like many before me, was absolutely hooked, both by the plot and the characters.
I was, therefore, intrigued by the film version; how faithfully would it capture the spirit of the original, how much would be changed or omitted altogether and how close would the celluloid realisations of the characters match those on the printed page?
Well, the adaptation is really pretty faithful; it is a long book and, consequently, quite a long film which does race by, however and the only major change, as far as I can see, is the excision of the male hero's relationships with a couple of subsidiary but important female characters.
As far as the realisation of the central characters is concerned, well, within a few minutes, I was sold even though seeing the actress Noomi Rapace in the "flesh" in the accompanying "special feature" interview came as a bit of a surprise ; this is how I will picture the characters when I read the remaining two books in the trilogy.
As I have already implied, the film makes riveting viewing, even if there is an air of "made for television" about it.
You can watch it in the original Swedish with English subtitles, but I chose to watch it in the dubbed version, which was not too bad, even if it was sometimes at variance with the subtitles.
The acting is very good indeed. Noomi Rapace is quite mesmerising in the title role, while Michael Nydvist, although hardly a conventional leading man, is wholly convincing as the journalist Mikael Blomkvist.
The supporting cast is excellent and it was good to encounter 70s heartthrob Sven Bertil Taube in a pivotal role.
Undeniably exciting as the film is, it is the exploration of the dark underbelly of outwardly respectable society which gives it its edge.
I await the Hollywood version with interest, but it will have its work cut out to match this one. Special Features include interviews with Noomi Rapace and the film's producer.

Don't worry if you hate reading sub-titles - you can select the English dubbed version and believe me it is not like the awful dubbing of old - it's very cleverly done and once you're into the story you don't even notice it.
Of course the film simplifies the book; Blomskvist takes on the case of looking for Harriet without the 'guise' of writing the families history as a cover, which happens in the book, and there is no exploration of Blomvists relationship with other women which is quite a key feature of the book.
However, to keep the film to a reasonable length I can understand why they couldn't include everything. The film doesn't hold back on any of the voilence and all the leads are fantastic in their roles; particularly the actress who played Salander.
Visually I was expecting the actor who played Blomskvist to be more 'wirey' - he's quite well built in this - but the acting was spot on.
It also struck me that the older actresses in this film were allowed to look real - wrinkles and all. I suspect in the American version everyone will look botoxed to perfection!
If you loved the book the film will not disappoint.

If you loved the book the film will not disappoint. One person found this helpful. Having read the Stieg Larsson trilogy, and found them amongst the most gripping modern crime novels I've tried, I was interested to see this TV treatment.
Often visual renditions of a story you have become attached to can jar against your own pre-formed images of the characters.
In this case I was very impressed. Lisbeth Salander isn't quite as I imagined, but the gap is not a large one and proved no difficulty; she is ceertainly believable in the role.
As usual in dramatisations, the story has been simplified to save time; but I didn't think this damaged it significantly.
Blomkvist's cover story "writing the Vanger family history" is dropped entirely, and the Wennerstrom scandal cut back very heavily, but after all these are secondary to the main story and don't impede the dramatic development.
And the more brutal elements of the story, which I think were pretty important to Larsson, are not compromised upon. I'm fascinated now to see how volumes 2 and 3 would be treated by the same team!
Keeps you gripping the seat, not memorable but you won't be thinking about anything else when you're watching it. I bought this because i read Noomi Rapace really acted the character well, which is true.
I think it shows that he was alive when this was published in the far tighter editing than the others. I bought english language mixed length DVDs trilogy - i didn't realise there were cut and longer versions - watched them all in Swedish with subtitles option on all of them and every time saw the uncut version.
This one is worth watching the uncut version. The second is terribly wordy, watch the short version. Third, you choose. I think, looking back, the book would have been better than the film, but i knew i'd only do one.
