If you haven't seen this movie, you owe it to yourself to purchase and watch it. It WILL leave you breathless.
There seems to be a reasonable compromise between keeping the sharpness without excessive noise reduction or enhancing the film grain.
From my cursory viewing, I think the black levels were enhanced by the HDR, so it should be an improvement. I say this because, on watching old standard BDs, it seems like they generally make greater compromises with regard to dynamic range.
With HDR on 4k discs, it seems like one gets the benefits of the very bright dynamic setting on older HDTVs without most of the compromises.
Natalie Portman is an orphaned waif in a very early role. Jean Reno is a gentle, soft spoken but very effective contract killer. Both are very good but in different ways.

To say it was written and shot within 90 days is remarkable. They were waiting for Bruce Willis to be free before they could start shooting 5th Element.
The crew and equipment were going to go to waste so Besson shot Leon. The story and direction is very good however the film shines because of the high level of acting talent.
Oldman certainly, Reno definitely, Portman is just remarkable though. She was 12!!! Damaged, precocious, world weary but still just a child. Stunning and probably one of the best child actor performances ever.
The "Lolita" scene that some people find disturbing and was taken out of the American edit because audiences started awkwardly giggling through it shows just how damaged Mathilda is.
Russo plays, and had planned to play, Leon as a slightly slow minded and an emotionally repressed character who had been hurt by a past love.
He adopts Matilda and never saw her as a sexual partner and rejects any notion she has of such a relationship.
The sexual undertones and tension comes from a disturbed and abused Mathilda. If you want to see the first film appearance of the Leon character then get your hands on Besson's "La Femme Nikita".

This film is worth watching for many reasons. One is the photography with some fascinating camera angles and mesmerising close-ups.
The relationship between Mathilde brillliantly played by 13 year old Natalie Portman and the hitman Leon is uncomfortable but never strays out of bounds.
He teaches her to kill. She teaches him to read. Despite a large age gap, she emerges as the senior partner in their partnership.
Gary Oldman plays a psychotic homicidal corrupt policeman with flair. You'll either love his acting or hate it. It's certainly over the top and memorable.
The film contains many cliches. Much of the violence is stereotypical. Many of the lines are predictable. But overall, this is a refreshingly original and beautifully filmed movie that stays in the mind long after you've put the DVD back in its case.
Along with Nikita, is Besson's best film ever. Presented on an pretty good however not superlative blu ray, Leon wonderfully mixes urban american crime with french noir, in the Melville that is "in the Samurai" way.
And reveal Jean Reno to the world: a face like no other, who magically pair with a pretty little girl called Natalie Portman. Watched after more than 20 years, Leon not only confirms its perfect casting choices Reno became a symbol of French cinema and in general of silent, detached noir hero, while Natalie Portman simply became Natalie Portman but still a dramatic, almost tragic yet poetic and romantic spirit, that grow stronger the more violence and action take hold, underlining the contrast between the evil of the world and the ideal small intimate world where the two characters try to hide from the real one.
Leon is realistic and lyrical at the same time, injecting a personal and original touch in an otherwise revenge story.
What a movie. Leon is a fantastic movie with full of action. The assassination games between Reno and the bad guy become very interesting.
Both actors perform great and fit to their role especially Portman because of her age at the time. For a young teenager to act the way she acted is such an achievement for an actor or in this case a very young actress.
Its even better on blu ray. The quality is there. The sound is even better. With surround sound you will love it even more.
