Westerns were everywhere at the time. With the saturation level and many changes in social mores, I had lost interest.
I got interested in the genre through reading A. This led me to the film version of "Shane" with Guthrie's screenplay. The novel by Jack Schaeffer is another Western that goes beyond genre writing.
I was moved when I finally spent an evening watching "Shane". This is a beautiful film about the West, about courage, and about growing up.
The cinematography of the West is outstanding, the musical score is lavish, and the acting is convincing. Most of all this is a story of a passing way of life, as the mysterious retired gunfighter Shane comes to a small Wyoming community of farmers and helps to establish them against the ranchers.
I enjoyed reading the many Amazon reviews in enhancing my appreciation of the movie. The lead review, by a nameless reviewer, states perceptively: " this film is more about principles than action.
It exemplifies principles and values that unfortunately have become outdated in today's society such as, character, integrity, loyalty, pride in accomplishment, persistence and the willingness to fight for what is right.
It is also an excellent human interest story and succeeds in getting the viewer to love the homesteaders and hate the ranchers. Part of the reason people turned away from Westerns was a disenchantment with the values and portrayal of America they offered.
Guthrie's books helped me reach this conclusion. Shane brings back an earlier America and its values, as the prior reviewer noted, and it is a voice that still has something to teach a different, more cynical time.

I've been a big fan since childhood I won't tell you how long ago that was and it was the first thing I saw when I bought my first color TV in I was eager with anticipation when I bought the Blu-ray release, although my DVD has provided pleasure in multiple viewings.
When I got the Blu-ray, I immediately put it on and was blown away by the new sharpness and detail of the new transfer. Then I got to the night scenes, shot with "day-for-night" techniques.
I discovered that these scenes kept shifting - from OK to really dark, so much that you couldn't really see the things in the scene clearly. And, again, it kept shifting - didn't remain the same during these scenes which was extremely distracting as these scenes are some of the best and most dramatic in the move.
This is incredibly disappointing considering the magnificence of the photography of this movie. Don't know if I can really watch it this way. Is it possible this is a defective copy or are they all this way?

Really, it is unmatched. Van Heflin is genius. Jean Arthur is utterly believable as a frontier wife and mother. When she's begging her husband not to heave to fight the bad guys, you feel every twinge of her anguish.
Brandon DeWilde is arguably the best child actor I've ever seen. His performance is absolutely flawless. He's so clear in his characters belief of right and wrong and conveys that through a childish innocence that breaks your heart.
Jack Palance is the ultimate in long legged, chiseled featured, mean looking gun slingers. You know from the minute he rides into town that he already has a bullet with Shane's name on it.
Yes, this movie is a thriller too Even if you aren't a big fan of Westerns, it'd be a shame to miss Shane.
Thought I had seen this one so many times that I scarcely needed to see it again. All the same, never having forgotten how breathtakingly beautiful it is, I couldn't resist purchasing such an inexpensive Blu Ray.
Checking out this edition, I not only found it to be truly exquisite but I discovered that the movie richly rewarded yet another viewing.

The film is mins tho the original running time is given as mins.. PG certificate.. So if you like a good western or just any film that's 'suitable for the family' but deals with a serious subject then you know what to do..
This latest restoration is by far the best DVD release of this classic film. Having the original release aspect ratio is a joy to the eye since it fills the entire scope of a widescreen TV.
The two DVD set includes all aspect ratios that this film has seen in over the years in both mono and stereo sound.
The set includes the re-release trailer along with a commentary option by Stevens Jr plus a documentary on the film itself. The colour and detail are superb and the film looks as though it was released yesterday instead of over 60 years ago.
In my opinion this film could never be bettered if someone were to remake it today. It's a case of perfect casting alongside perfect Direction and perfect cinematography.
As a further bonus a book accompanies the set telling you more or less everything you might want to know about the film.
This superb western with its stunning location photography has never looked better than on this Eureka Masters of Cinema edition. The under-rated Alan Ladd is iconic in the title role as the stranger who intervenes in the perennial ranchers versus homesteaders dispute.
Of course, a great western needs a great villain and the pre-stardom Jack Palance is riveting in his few scenes in the second half of the film, particularly in his confrontations with Elisha Cook Jr and Ladd.
Van Heflin and the great Jean Arthur lend solid support and little Brandon De Wilde is perfect as young Joey through whose eyes most of the action is seen.
I think this is George Stevens' s best film which is saying a lot given his long career. The commentary from producer Ivan Moffat and George Stevens Jr is also one of the best and most informative I have heard given that both were on location during the shoot.

One person found this helpful. This is a classic Western - almost a black hats vs white hats affair - solidly crafted and beautifully shot.
A good versus evil tale, which, however does show some sympathy for the bully rancher. The life of a farmer out on the plains is pretty realistic, I should think, though sometimes the women wear finery they probably would not have.
The clash of the culture of the cattle men and the farmers is also convincing. All the actors fit their parts well, although I think someone who had been a gunfighter would have a tougher, more cynical character than Ladd.
Their is no bitterness in this film, and an appreciation of landscape, which I find satisfying. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?
