OK I admit it. I bought this book for someone else, and then read it myself! Have you never done that? I plead … well, I have no excuse really.

The temptation was just too great. Each episode lasts between one and three minutes. These videos be OK I admit it. These videos became so popular that they led to this book in , which was followed by additional titles.

This book has a few single cartoons, but mostly comprises strips and sequential blocks telling the stories.

In real life, Simon Tofield has four cats, called Teddy, Hugh, Jess and Maisie, all of whose behaviour provide the basis of his inspiration.

The cartoon cat has never been officially named, although writer Simon Tofield says that he is mostly based on Hugh.

All the episodes are based either around getting more food, or getting more creature comforts. Although Simon himself is the only long-suffering human, other characters pop in and out of the series.

The dog loves to play fetch, and often does not realise that the cat is making him look a fool. However in this case, the bird usually outsmarts him.

This derives from English folklore, where hedgehogs steal windfall apples by rolling along the ground so that the apples attach themselves to their prickles.

The garden gnome is usually depicted holding either a fishing rod or a net. Instinctively he chases the mouse on sight, but the mouse is very clever.

As such, it should in theory transfer well to the page. If you are a slave to a cat in your home, you will instantly recognise much of the behaviour exhibited here.

Whether cute, dangerous, destructive or downright disgusting, it is totally authentic. I recommend all cat-lovers to watch one or two if you have never done so.

A fun, relaxing read that did bring back some personal nostalgic moments, since my old high school tutor used to put SC videos on each morning before class!

Jun 25, Heidi The Reader rated it it was ok Shelves: for-my-kid , graphic-art-or-comic , fiction. I had, perhaps, unrealistically high hopes for this graphic novel after the mammoth success with my kid that was I am Pusheen the Cat , but, sadly, we are back to where we started with my reluctant reader.

She wouldn't even open Simon's Cat. The graphic novels are alike in that both feature kitties, but their approach is very different.

Pusheen is about how cute and colorful Pusheen is. Simon's Cat is more about the cat's behavior and interaction with his human.

Pusheen had a few words in it. Sim I had, perhaps, unrealistically high hopes for this graphic novel after the mammoth success with my kid that was I am Pusheen the Cat , but, sadly, we are back to where we started with my reluctant reader.

Simon's Cat is told entirely through pictures. I enjoyed this book because I have a bunch of cats and I know exactly what its like to be awakened in the middle of the night, forced off the bed, and have my luggage pirated by a strong-willed feline.

For the under ten set, they may get some of the more obvious jokes- like any of the hunting or "want food" moments, but otherwise, this comic may not appeal.

I suspect that she didn't open this one because it is completely in black and white and she's drawn to the bright and colorful. I actually rather liked it myself, "read" through it with my husband, and got a few chuckles out of the misadventures of Simon's cat.

Oh well. Recommended for anyone with a cat who enjoys funny situations and simple pictures. View 2 comments. I wish I had a cat :. View all 8 comments.

Jan 28, Skip rated it it was ok Shelves: humor , graphic-novels. I just could not get that interested in this one. While there are a few sketches that are unique and funny, many are repetitious in different contexts.

I mean how many times can Simon pose as a birdhouse, for example? I hope the YouTube videos are more worthwhile.

Nov 10, Kelly Long rated it really liked it Shelves: comics-and-graphic-novels , dogs-and-cats. This is a quick, funny read based on the YouTube videos.

Being owned by 2 cats, I can relate to a lot of these comics. Mar 18, Dane Cobain rated it liked it. Really, though, I would have liked to have seen some sort of dialogue, some words that I could read instead of just pictures to look at.

And to be honest, it was kinda dull after the first five. So yeah. Quick humorous 'read'. More amusing than outright funny, but there were a few genuine laughs.

The '' around the word 'read' refers to how there was nothing written. Pictures without text. Nov 18, Sarah rated it it was amazing Shelves: read-in , books-i-own-print , favorites.

If you're a cat fan or just in need of a pick me up you can't fail to laugh at the Simon's Cat videos and the book is just the same.

I'd recommend this to anyone, it makes a great coffee table book and is something you will return to again and again.

The second book Simon's Cat: Beyond the Fence was released in October and once again it is at the top of my Christmas wish list!

Being a huge fan of the Simon's Cat videos that are posted on youtube, I had to see if this book was just as good. I did love the videos so much more.

Still worth taking a look at though. This is apparently based on some popular YouTube videos of the same name. I've never heard of it, but since I almost never go to YouTube, that's not saying much.

Still, I saw the title on the Goodreads giveaways list and decided to enter to win a free book. I have a cat, and who doesn't love a good cartoon about cats?

I was lucky enough to win a copy. This was cute. I think every cat owner will recognize their cat in these pages. The way he's always begging for food, plotting to catch the local w This is apparently based on some popular YouTube videos of the same name.

The way he's always begging for food, plotting to catch the local wildlife, ripping off his bell-collar, and just generally being a lovable, annoying furball are spot on.

There's one section about the ordeal of getting the cat into the pet carrier and to the vet that I am going to show my aunt.

She will love it! And does she have a story about that! Some things seemed a little familiar from Garfield mostly the cat-as-birdhouse routines , but mostly this was original and funny.

With his best friend the garden gnome and his arch-nemesis the porcupine in tow, Simon's cat will charm your socks off.

One thing that bothered me was that I wasn't sure where one little storyline ended and where another started. They weren't consistently the same length, sometimes there were several on a page, and sometimes one little story went on for pages.

Maybe it was just me. But still--that's what knocked this down a star. Overall, though, I recommend this for cat lovers. I'll be checking out the YouTube videos soon myself.

The drawings in this book are basically like the videos, but the book doesn't give the same taste. It lacks the small yet important details in cats' behaviours.

Still, how can someone not like the Simon's Cat? Cute but dull at times. But mostly cute. Nov 07, Christine booktumbling rated it it was amazing.

I had actually never seen the You Tube animations but after reading the entire book yesterday and giggling, nodding my head in agreement, falling out of my chair, wiping tears of laughter and recovering from that stiffness you get in your cheeks due to smiling so much, I jumped on the computer and started the laugh-fest all over again.

This is such a happy-hearted, joyous book and the author is spot-on in portraying behavior of the feline kind as well as those who are slave to the cat!

I cannot recommend this book enough for cat lovers, those thinking of adopting a cat and even for those non-cat fanatics.

This is a book that has a home in my permanent collection. It's a funny series of cartoons about the cat that belongs to Simon. Hence Simon's Cat.

Based on the successful series of YouTube cartoons this book attempts to extend that success to print. Sadly, while funny, it's not quite on a par with the short film versions.

Nov 23, Betsy rated it really liked it. I think we've gotten to the point where we're all pretty comfortable or at least familiar with the idea of the webcomic that is later turned into a book.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the most famous example of this, but it happens all the time. A webcomic becomes popular, and inevitably there's a print edition.

Far rarer is the webvideo that makes the successful leap from short film to paper. Over the years the Simon's Cat web series has garnered millions of fans.

So obviously, a book was going to I think we've gotten to the point where we're all pretty comfortable or at least familiar with the idea of the webcomic that is later turned into a book.

So obviously, a book was going to be the next step. Considering how well Tofield animates cat behavior, you could be forgiven for not really believing that his images would translate to static comics.

As it happens, not all his images do work, but the bulk of them stand on their own very well and the result is a comic collection that improves on those old Garfield strips of yore.

In hundreds of small comics, a neckless cat of indeterminate age or breed does the things cats do. Yearns to destroy.

The images are simple pen-and-inks. No color. That's about the long and short of it, really. The reason the book version of Simon's Cat works is twofold.

First, Tofield doesn't caption his images. There's a webseries out there now also a book called Garfield Minus Garfield which highlights how unfunny that particular cartoon cat is by removing him from comic strips, leaving only his owner.

It's a definite improvement. Simon's Cat , in contrast, uses visual gags entirely and it works so much better. It's like watching a sitcom without an annoying laugh track.

You don't need words for certain kinds of visual storytelling. That's one. The second reason this book works is that it's kid friendly.

It hasn't been specifically marketed to children, but kids will get a definite kick out of Tofield's small stories. And as you read through it you begin to recognize reoccurring characters.

The garden gnome that the cat befriends. The hedgehogs betraying Mr. Tofield's homeland in the garden or the birds and mice bent on torturing the poor kitty.

It all builds to a kind of conclusion. A lot of the time the gags are just one panel standing on their own. Other times they go for several "scenes".

Strangely, you can never know when a gag will be one or another. There's no rhyme or reason to how they're broken up. Sometimes a gag will begin on a right-hand page and then you'll have to turn the page to get the rest.

Other times you feel like there should be more to the joke, but instead you're just left hanging. It would have been nice if there was more consistency to the layout.

Still, I appreciated that the panels which are never enclosed in boxes shift from full-page spreads to eclectic sections of one page or another.

Your eyes are constantly moving and roving all over these pages. It means that you don't get stuck in the same static way of reading each page. As for his art itself, you are never in doubt that this is a book created by a cat owner.

It's not so much the animal's body itself that tells you this. Tofield's cats tend to have stocky little builds, resembling koalas or small panda bears rather than sleek handsome felines.

But in terms of movement he is dead on. He's particularly good at drawing a cat mere moments before the pounce. Those slicked back ears.

The way the pupils grow large. You can practically see its little rump wiggling as it gets ready for a lethal leap upon some unsuspecting leaf or piece of fluff.

As cat books go, this one's pretty much superior to the usual fare. In terms of comics for kids, it reads like a collection of comic strips rather than a straight out graphic novel.

There's stuff I would have changed about it, but if you happen to know a kid or adult that thinks cats are the bees' knees AND they have a thing for comics, this is plain good stuff.

And maybe it's the first of its kind. Maybe in the future it's all gonna be webvideos turned into collected comics.

One thing's for certain. The cream usually rises to the top. And Simon's Cat , whatever else you might call it, is the best of its kind I've seen.
