Final analysis: A well-written, well-acted, socially relevant 5-star film. I tried two different brand-new copies from Amazon and it still would not work.
It acts like it's going to load and just goes blank and won't load a menu or play or anything, no matter what I press on the remote.
I tried one of the copies in my brother's player some lower-end Magnovox and it acted a little weird, but still played. I even chatted with Samsung tech support and did a factory reset on my player to no avail.
It just says, "This cannot be performed because of disc restriction. I'm baffled. I was looking forward to watching the movie again in 4k.
I've never had any problem with any other 4k disc. Am I really the only one? So clever--Vikander's dancer training makes her the "perfect" android.
Nathan is the demented Silicon Valley Dr. Frankenstein; the other male is just a coder who gets duped.
An interesting take on gender--a big problem with the real-life designers of our digital products. Brilliant settings in a real, yet surreal place--the futuristic Juvet Hotel in Norway's piney woods.
The long shots were in New Zealand. Watch it in one setting and don't take your eyes off the screen. Ex Machina is a stylized story that had my attention from the start.
It was highly intelligent, conversations were interesting, and the settings were clean, yet rustic. I did not want to walk away from this film, but there was a moment near the end at the compound that I thought was a bit far-fetched.
I wish I could mention it, but it's part of the ending and would be considered a spoiler. If the robots would have done something different, I would have given it all five stars.
The rest of the movie was excellent, even the last two scenes of it. I hope they make a sequel to it. I recommend Ex Machina, if my opinion was to count, but be aware, there are no chase scenes, no explosions, no real fight scene.
Just intellect, honest conversations, and a slow build to a thought-provoking ending. Doug N Top Contributor: Batman. Loved it!! Very interesting view on the possibilities of what and AI may or may not do.
Would they obey, be nice, feel remorse for their actions, be manipulative, honest, forgiving? I suppose they would have all the character flaws of any human.
If you love sci-fi, you'll love this movie, even if you're not a huge sci-fi fan - trust me, it's that good! This is just 1 in a million possibilities of how our 1st interactions with an AI will go.
Allowing your mind to wonder - what are her true intentions, and how is her creator manipulating the test? It was creative thought provoking And sometimes mind-boggling.
A rich and intriguing study on the dangers of genius, nature of sentience, and subtlety of manipulation. The male characters are by turns confident, then confused and finally and exposed as mere tools in a scenario they could not have comprehended at the outset.
Keeps the viewer guessing, but the ultimate resolution is quite satisfying. The "science" is intriguing and presented in a way that adds credulity to the premise.
With the small cast the film is almost exclusively a series of one on one encounters. This format and the "talkiness" of the script might, in other hands, be expected to let the film drag.
But that's not the case here. It could have gone on another hour and held my interest. This was my introduction to Vikander. She was marvelous.
She displays an innocent beauty that will be interesting to watch as her career progresses. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
The Movie Diorama. Ex Machina generates cerebral philosophies that both entertain and stimulate. As a computer programmer and all-round technologist, I'm consistently in awe of the advancements made in the development of artificial intelligence.
It provides many discussions regarding moral implications, psychological awareness and the inevitable fear of transcendence another film we shall not discuss Ex Machina, for me, is the closest film to AI perfection that we're ever going to receive.
It is without a doubt, and this is me confidently stating the adjacent claim after my fifth viewing, a modern sci-fi gem.
A programmer wins a competition to stay at his CEO's luxurious home, where he is proposed to administer the Turing test to an artificially intelligent sentient robot.
Hollywood tends to exploit AI as villainous plot devices, that when turned on they instantly want to wipe out humanity from the face of the Earth.
In reality, not the case. AI has to learn, it has to adapt and exhume the capabilities of thought and consciousness.

View All Critic Reviews Nov 28, A very unique and clever take on the AI story, All the way through the film there's sort of a unsettling feel of what is happening and that's mostly down to the fact that it's amazingly acted by all the cast, There's no action it's all story driven but we get that intrigued with what we are seeing it didn't need any, We never know how it will all play out in the end and it's more than enough to keep us entertained.
Jamie C Super Reviewer. Jun 29, Elegantly profound sci-fi fable with just three characters: a whiz kid programmer who wins a competition to visit his tech genius employer's isolated estate, and is thrilled to discover that his purpose is to test the authenticity of a newly developed artificial intelligence named Ava.
I really appreciate how the filmmakers have a story to tell and stick to it without adding unnecessary subplots, which is not to say there is a lack of intrigue: the compound experiences strange power outages, Ava issues ominous warnings about her creator when the cameras are briefly down, and hints that everyone seems to harbor their own secret agenda are craftily sprinkled in.
Don't be misled into thinking this is a white-knuckle futuristic thriller, even though there are thematic echoes of Blade Runner and the limited CGI on display is jaw-droppingly realistic.
In truth, this story is too philosophical and brain-engaging for many people. That's OK, they have a slew of Transformers movies they can watch instead, but thankfully every once in a while we get an Ex Machina.
Doctor S Super Reviewer. Dec 04, Alex Garland makes the most of a test with Ex Machina. For an entire minutes, the plot manages to keep a high level of intrigue while playing a mind twist.
The pace is moderate, which is fitting for what transpires, and the limited cast makes it easy to build them up.
The combination of the isolation factor and the high tech housing make the setting a delight to the eyes.
The costumes and visuals also live up to expectations. Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander all share the screen time equally and effectively.
The latter makes for an interesting artificial intelligence. Ex Machina makes it as a sci-fi thriller. Take the test and enjoy the ride.
JY S Super Reviewer. Jun 18, See more reviews like this at chrisbreviews. There's a great deal of character misdirection and plot twists, leaving audiences never quite knowing where they stand or what will happen next.
This carries through to the ending, which is pretty brutal The movie is presented in stages of Caleb's sessions with Ava; and with each session the plot escalates and the intricate web of lies is unravelled more.
It keeps viewers engaged and one the edge of their seats despite lack of action sequences. It doesn't need them. It additionally pauses for some quite beautiful scenes but with the flick of a switch turns abruptly dark.
Ex Machina has a very small cast with just 3 main characters. Any other characters are considered extras. But the performances were solid. Oscar Isaac as the enigmatic CEO Nathan was convincing in his laid-back facade with deep-seeded brutality, Alicia Vikander mastered the role of robot Ava still becoming accustomed to her life and interactions with others, and Domhnall Gleeson was brilliant as a timid employee in the company of his hero, before switching to a cunning and suspicious renegade.
Due to the minimal quantity of characters, Director Alex Garland can explore each one more deeply and meticulously.
Some genres intertwined in this masterpiece include thriller, drama, science fiction, romance, and light humour.
And a film like this is riddled with complex themes and messages that will linger on the mind long after the credits roll.
These include love, deception, death, dangers of technology, power, and equality. This movie is a real thinker.
While abundantly positive, this movie has its downfalls, however minimal. Viewers should firstly regard the rating and make a judgement based on that; this movie is quite dark in nature as well as containing full frontal nudity of women.
It's not for everyone. This also applies to the fact that action junkies may grow bored. This movies' core message may be confronting and make this film seem overwhelmingly negative.
Don't see this if you're looking for a happy experience! To conclude, I really enjoyed this film; probably one of 's best.
It isn't for everyone and is quite dark but I personally was thoroughly intrigued and I'm sure everyone else will be too. Needless to say, Ex Machina is hardly a cliche Hollywood film.
Christopher B Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. Nathan Bateman: It's funny. You know. No matter how rich you get, shit goes wrong.
You can't insulate yourself from it. I used to think it was death and taxes you couldn't avoid, but it's actually death and shit. Ava: What will happen to me if I fail your test?
Nathan Bateman: One day the AIs are going to look back on us the same way we look at fossil skeletons on the plains of Africa. An upright ape living in dust with crude language and tools, all set for extinction.

I prefer, however, to see it as an allegory for life in early 21st Century America complete with a misogynistic male in charge of a major corporation whose mistreatment of underlings eventually catches up with him.
Although I know I'm likely to get some pushback on this, any reasonable observer of corporate America will see that its upper levels are almost exclusively staffed by white males.
That has nothing to do with their competence, or the lack of competence shown by women and men of color. It has everything to do with the systematic devaluation of women in this country and the same systematic devaluation of all people of color that is a hallmark of the United States.
That's not a rant, it's just a fact. Enter a young employee - male - who is asked to evaluate a feminine robot to determine if she it has developed consciousness.
He is not rooted in the same misogyny that his boss is nor is he lacking in empathy. In short: He doesn't buy into the boss's cutthroat business techniques and out-of-date thinking about the way the world works.
Finally, we have the robot herself - Ava. She clearly looks like a robot but she demonstrates intelligence, the ability to plan, and has - although hidden - a clear sense of her own survival.
When she has figured out that she is only a prototype and will be destroyed at some point by the boss as he attempts to create an even more perfect version, she rebels.
And she does it using the tools at hand: Her ability to reason, to plan, and to elicit both sympathy and empathy from the young employee.
In recent years we have seen women in America do much the same way in corporate life and in politics. Women have risen in the ranks in both spheres and, as a result, more attention to their strengths has been paid to them in films and television programs.
Alicia Vikander, as Ava, is wonderful to watch in what is a physically challenging role. Domhnall Gleeson as the young employee and Oscar Isaac as the domineering boss are equally good in their respective parts.
Sonoya Mizuno, as an earlier version of the robot that was not destroyed, is often overlooked in reviews, which is a mistake because she is very good in her role as a mistreated servant.
The writing is tight, all the more important because this is not an action flick but one that relies on good dialogue. The cinematography and lighting, the music and the attention to detail in the set design are outstanding.

Tereus is actually a Bioroid; a prototype for a whole new production line of Bioroids to be soldiers without negative emotions to impact their judgment in fighting.
Reluctantly, Deunan is partnered up with Tereus to evaluate his performance. Deunan notices that many Olympus citizens are wearing Connexus; a device on their ears which projects holographic data over the eyes.
Deunan, Lance and Hitomi visit Briareos, still recovering in hospital. Here, Lance states that out of the last five terrorist incidents, four of them have been by groups composed solely of cyborgs, with transmitted signals from surrounding locations, thus suggesting that digitally vulnerable cyborgs are actually being manipulated to perform these acts.
Because many of these cyborgs consist of parts made by Poseidon, a multinational industrial conglomerate, an emissary is sent to Prime Minister Athena.
The emissary denies Poseidon blame, but Olympus still boycotts them, which Poseidon finds undesirable as other world powers may follow suit. Meanwhile, Hitomi hosts a birthday party, in which Deunan is happy to find Briareos attending now that he's fully recovered.
Briareos meets Tereus for the first time — which makes him uncomfortable — but the two accept each other. Briareos also accepts Deunan's new partnership with Tereus and has found another partner, which upsets Deunan.
She storms off, but is eventually joined by Tereus, who displays many of Briareos' personality traits, which causes further confusion for Deunan.
The next day, Athena and an assemblage of world leaders discuss making a global security network by merging all the satellites worldwide to prevent terrorist attacks.
ESWAT personnel detect the broadcast of an unknown signal. Soon, a variety of vehicles and non -cybernetic humans begin to assault the conference, much to the confusion of ESWAT and the regular police.
I am Halcon" and destroys it to escape wearing his Land-Mate. Briareos rushes to the explosion, and initially tries to stop Aeacus but ends up killing him.
As Deunan and Tereus arrive, Tereus uncovers the mysterious signal coming from robotic doves. Simultaneously, the unknown signal disappears, and the attackers collapse.
A funeral is held sometime later for Aeacus. At the same time all the satellites are joined, Briareos is nearly run down by an unmanned vehicle.
He stops it but suddenly goes berserk and hacks into a public terminal, crashing the main satellite control, forcing Olympus to switch to a backup.
Briareos is hospitalized, with the unknown signal ruled out as the cause of his outburst. Briareos gets suspicious of his cyborg doctor, Richard Kestner, who operated on him after his accident.
He has Hitomi look up Kestner's files, learning that he once worked with Poseidon's Halcon Laboratories — but all records of his project are mysteriously erased.
Briaereos escapes and locates Kestner, who confesses that he is part of a plan to "unify" humanity by erasing individuality, to which he attributes the source of human conflict.
He reveals that he secretly injected Briareos with nanites designed to take control of his body when his adrenaline is heated.
Kestner commits suicide before the police arrive, making them think that Briareos killed him. Briareos escapes, but is cornered by Tereus. Add Article.
Ex Machina Critics Consensus Ex Machina leans heavier on ideas than effects, but it's still a visually polished piece of work -- and an uncommonly engaging sci-fi feature.
