Aberforth, in , attended the funeral of his late brother Albus after a fateful night in the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts. Aberforth was now the only living Dumbledore.
After his brother's untimely death, the once safe haven known as Hogwarts was overrun by Voldemort and his followers.
The new headmaster to fill Albus's shoes were Severus Snape himself, the man who initially murdered Dumbledore that fateful night just a year or less before.
Two notable croons of Voldemort's was the Carrow twins. They took care of punishment for any student who went against their wishes, which led to many students being tortured.
Due to this cruel punishment, the Room of Requirement was used as a hideaway for many of the school students, The room had a secret passage of which led straight to the Hog's Head Inn where Aberforth consistently supplied students with food and water.
At some point, Harry came into possession of a small fragment of the two-way mirror Aberforth had bought off of Mundungus.
Aberforth used this to his advantage to keep an eye on Harry during his journey to hunt and destroy Horcruxes. The fragment came in handy when Harry used it to ask Aberfoth who Harry was unaware of was him at the time for help out of Malfoy Manor.
Aberforth responded by sending Dobby the House Elf, the former slave of the Malfoy's, to Harry's aid. Harry and his friends made it out safely though.
Later in the story, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all apparate to Hogsmeade village hoping to find a way up to Hogwarts castle via secret passage.
Their cover, however, was immediatley blown by a Caterwauling Charm thereby informing Death Eater's of Harry's arrival in the village.
As the Death Eater's could not see Harry under the Invisibility Cloak, they released Dementors to locate Harry, but Harry warded them off with his Patronus Charm, which inevitably relayed his position to nearby Death Eaters.
Within this exact moment, Aberforth opened his door and ushered the trio under his roof while covering for them telling the Death Eaters that the Caterwauling Charm was set off by Aberforth letting out his cat, and the Patronus of which was perceived to be Harry's stag, was actually Aberforth's goat.
Afterwards, Harry recognized Aberforth as Albus's younger brother. Aberforth tried to convince the three to escape the village the next morning because he believed that Voldemort had won this war and that the Order was finished.
Harry refused by justifying he needed to finish the mission Aberforth's brother had laid out for Harry. Aberforth, still upset with his late brother over their sister's death, told Harry off for following his brother, and questioned whether or not Harry knew the entire truth about Dumbledore.
Harry was unable to respond. Aberforth then proceeded to tell the true story about Albus, their childhood, and their sister, Ariana.
He was taken aback though, when Harry told him that Albus admitted to Harry his regrets up till just moments before his own death after consuming the Drink of Despair.
This helped turn Aberforth's mind around. He gave into the inevitable, aiding Harry into the castle.
