They almost completely ignored Cathy's obsession with ballet - which was mentioned and alluded to, but not really clear.
Heather Graham seemed to have lost her acting ability for the entire film, and while Ellen Burstyn is a great actress, she was nowhere near as terrifying as Louise Fletcher in the 80's version.
And this is the real problem - the cast, story, and vibe of the 80's version was so much better - more suspenseful, believable, and terrifying - even WITHOUT the incest.
And unless Lifetime plans to make films of the entire series, the 80's version ended the film better as well. In the 80's version, I think we all GOT why the kids didn't just kick grandma's rear end and walk out - but here?
There seemed to be little reason to remain prisoners. Readers of the series know where this story eventually goes, but I kind of suspect Lifetime isn't planning this to be a series, so they should have allowed the same closure we saw in the 80's film.
As it is, there was virtually no real closure. Overall, a big disappointment. I waited 20 years for a good film adaptation of this book, and I guess I'll have to keep waiting.

This DOES stick much closer to the actual book. It is a made for TV movie, but I did find it enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it.

Verified Purchase. Easily one of the most infuriatingly bad movies I have ever seen. The acting is terrible, the direction is terrible, the repetitive and unoriginal soundtrack doesn't match the tone of the film, and the writing is so illogically disconnected from the way people interact, that I'm not entirely sure that the author was indeed human, but rather a visiting alien whose only understanding of human interaction was a Mary Shelley novel missing half of its pages.
To sum up my thoughts; even given the near infinite amount of energy and matter in the universe, everyone involved in the making of this movie should be arrested for the shameful waste of resources that it is.
I'm not sure what I hated more about this movie, but there is plenty to pick from. The awful acting mixed with ridiculous bouts of overacting, the gross borderline incestuous interactions between the siblings, the actual incest that was part of the plot, the stilted and unnatural sounding dialog, the all-around unlikeable characters, or the absurd plot that wanted to be taken seriously.
Take your pick. I wouldn't suggest wasting your time with this one. Their mother takes them to live with her rich parents, but ends up locking them away in the attic while trying to win back the affection of her father and gain the inheritance she feels she's entitled to.
This isn't the faithful adaptation of the V. Andrews novel that it should have been. It is filled with lots and lots of little differences here, Cathy's hair is cut by the grandmother rather than gummed up with tar, the mouse is named Fred rather than Mickey, Cory is found asleep in the attic rather than accidentally locked in a trunk, etc.
The performances are generally good, particularly Louise Fletcher as the evil grandmother, and though he doesn't have a single line, Alex Koba as creepy butler John.
Victoria Tennant overdoes it a little as Corinne. Adorable Ben Ganger steals the show as Cory. Blink and you'll miss V.
Andrews in a quickie cameo as a maid washing a window. Highly recommended, but it's best enjoyed by putting the book if you've read it out of your mind.
Also, a word of warning for those looking to purchase this film on DVD. I was sucked in by the nifty cover art, and got stuck with a dud.
This print is muddy and dark, making seeing details--even in daylight scenes--difficult. Plus, something's up with the soundtrack.
The beautiful, haunting score is jittery in spots, and some of the actors' voices sound unnaturally high-pitched.
Extras are severely lacking. They should also reissue Christopher Young's score to this film. Why it's not available is a headscratcher.
Where's Kristy Swanson and Louise Fletcher? Victoria Tennant? It makes me think that this movie really was the hot mess it's been described as and that the actors would just as soon forget they were ever a part of it.
