I have the CD with just 9 tracks on it because CD capacity at the time was not where it was when the edition came out , but also the Special New Edition, which is not the same and was re-recorded, nearly unlistenable, crap.
Unfortunately, it appears that the label is never going to go back and release the original versions of the songs, which not only sound better due to the lack of "loudness wars" hysteria that later cranked this album up there with the likes of Metallica, but were very obviously designed to be performed exactly with the equipment that the band had on stage in , synthesizers and all.
It appears that the "Special New Edition" sounds worse, in part, because they are using a synthesizer that merely approximates the ones used on stage in Is the new equipment better or worse?
Well, every experience is subjective. Subjectively, I say that the version, which also ripped Ednah Holt and Lynn Mabry out of , dynamically compressed them, and inserted them with a re-recording of David Byrne, results in a loud and inauthentic "Frankenstein" performance that while not completely ruined, is also not pleasant to listen through.
To speed the "Special Edition" along, the record company also changed the cadence of each song, and it shows when you do a direct comparison of both tracks.
Since it's obvious that Sire will never release a corrected version of Stop Making Sense on CD format or anywhere else for that matter and that I bought the rights to "space shift" the format when I purchased the disc, in accordance with United States Supreme Court precedent and the Audio Home Recording Act of , I have made FLAC copies for my own listening of the original performance as presented on the Blu Ray disc.
Yeah, the "Special Edition" is that bad. Sire needs to fix their garbage, as the only proper way to listen to this album is to own the Blu Ray Disc and select the original version on the menu.
That bit being out of the way, I definitely recommend this Blu Ray Disc as most of the performance is restored and remastered, and it has the real version of the album in its entirety.
Having listened to the tracks that are on the original CD from Sire and the ones from the Blu Ray on the same equipment leads me to believe that if the record company tampered with the originals when putting them on the Blu Ray, it's not evident.
What is evident is that the Blu Ray audio is of higher resolution than the CD if only slightly noticeable, as the CDDA format has held up quite well over the years and still bests the finest vinyl record you can purchase, if properly mastered.
All of this being out of the way, this is probably my favorite album from the s, period. In fact, I would go so far as to call it the distilled essence of the s and possibly even the peak of New Wave itself.
There will be people who disagree, and that's fine. The vocals themselves are crisp and clear. As the album's name implies, looking for any meaning in the lyrics is pointless, as Byrne jumps from one line to the next, which do not follow each other.
Yet, it all comes together and works, in the end. The album includes a live performance of most of the "essential" Talking Heads to date, and includes most of "Speaking In Tongues", which was practically a Greatest Hits album of its own despite being all new stuff in ' The Talking Heads released a few more albums Little Creatures, True Stories, and Naked after Stop Making Sense, and most of the tracks were okay, but nothing seems to be too obviously missing from Stop Making Sense despite the next three albums "existing".
Byrne's style of "talking" to the synthesizers and other instruments, which "talk back" to him in turn really pulls the album through.
In closing, if you have no idea who the Talking Heads were and wonder if you might like their stuff, I would recommend starting out here.
Unfortunately, the Brick is out of print. You can still find it floating around, but grotesquely overpriced, and Sire is screwing with fans again on sites that sell FLAC.
Sometimes they have bonus tracks from the Brick, sometimes they don't. Sometime's they're the remasters, sometimes they aren't.
Record company trickery. Unfortunately, Sire makes perfect sense. They want to sell you as many slightly different versions out of the back catalog as many times as people will pay.
I am telling you, People--even IF you are not "big fans" of Talking Heads, there is simply no way that you will not fall-in-love with this performance.
This came out in I was four years old at the time. But my dad raised me on good music. New Wave was the thing and one of the bands I heard frequently was Talking Heads.
Remain in Light and Speaking in Tongues were a couple of my favorite albums, at least according to my dad. I would ask him to play them all the time.
Later this movie came out on VHS and my dad rented it from the video store. I still remember the brown VHS box with the textured plastic and the semi-clear plastic sleeve holding the card with the name of the movie.
I was memorized by what I saw. I don't think I watched anything else during that two-night rental. Eventually we did get our own VHS copy and I played it until it started to wear out.
Things changed and our family split. It wouldn't be until I saw a sale on Amazon for digital copies of some movies, including this one, that I'd watch it again.
David Byrne is an amazing performer and engages with the crowd so well. If you are looking for nostalgic tracks that light up the room when you hear them, get on this video now!

It truly is a watch of the music anthology and repertoire of rock and roll history and this performance not only landmark's it, but gives way to the talent that this band held for so many great albums.
One of those times that I listened, I lay with my eyes closed and just enjoyed the music. Great Sound! And shot in Technicolor and directed by Jonathan Demme.
This will be a go-to video that I will watch again and again. I hadn't watched it in years and finding and viewing it on Blu Ray was a real treat.
I kept having to remind myself that this was originally released all the way back in Not only are the musical performances impeccable the stage craft is uber professional!
Hubby is the audio engineer in the family and he loves the different audio set-up options and has no complaints rare for him for a concert movie.
I love the way the concert builds momentum and that's all I can say without giving away too much. Some describe this as "post punk" and I dunno I don't much care for labels.
I'll just say it rocks and is a DVD I'll watch over and over. If you're a music fan, check this out and I guarantee one way or another, this WILL impress and rock you.

Play it LOUD and dance like no one is watching! The result is widely regarded as a leading contender for the best rock movie ever made.
It's absolutely riveting, mesmerising to watch. The other band members gradually join him one by one and two by two, until all nine are onstage.
The band's performance is truly awesome, and even if you were never a fan and haven't heard their music you're likely to be won over.
There has never been a band quite like Talking Heads, combining catchy tunes, exemplary musicianship, poignant social commentary in the song lyrics and performance-art.
Their demise was a loss to the spirit of true creativity and originality, but you still have this performance as a reminder of how great they were.

As most already know, the concert kicks off with a stripped down version of Psycho Killer, with just frontman David Byrne, his acoustic guitar, and a cassette player providing an electronic drum backing.
Byrne is his usual manic, idiosyncratic self - I always wondered how he managed to do that thing where he almost falls over but somehow manages to stay on the ground!
I liked the idea conceptually, but I found the second, third, fourth and fifth tracks a bit dull - sloppy even. With the sixth number, Burning Down The House, the whole band springs into life, and everything is highly entertaining from then on.

He introduces " Psycho Killer " by saying he wants to play a tape, but in reality a Roland TR drum machine starts playing from the mixing board. Performance equipment is wheeled out and added to the set to accommodate the additional musicians: back-up singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt, keyboardist Bernie Worrell , percussionist Steve Scales, and guitarist Alex Weir.
Byrne leaves the stage at one point to allow the Weymouth—Frantz-led side-band the Tom Tom Club to perform their song " Genius of Love ".
The film includes Byrne's "big suit", an absurdly large business suit that he wears for the song "Girlfriend Is Better". The suit was partly inspired by Noh theatre styles, and became an icon not only of the film — as it appears on the movie poster, for instance — but of Byrne himself.
Byrne said: "I was in Japan in between tours and I was checking out traditional Japanese theater — Kabuki , Noh , Bunraku — and I was wondering what to wear on our upcoming tour.
A fashion designer friend Jurgen Lehl said in his typically droll manner, 'Well David, everything is bigger on stage. It pioneered the use of track digital sound recording which resulted in a particularly clear soundtrack.
Demme had considered additional shooting on a soundstage made to recreate the Pantages Theater, but the band declined to do this, as they thought the lack of audience response would have hindered the energy of their performance.
Before the shooting of the movie, David Byrne implored the band to wear neutral-colored clothing so the stage lights would not illuminate anything too distinctive.
However, drummer Chris Frantz can still be seen wearing a turquoise-colored polo shirt. The movie version of " Once in a Lifetime " was released as a single and also appeared on the opening credits to the film Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
Also, in Europe , "Slippery People" became a big single, appearing on a single-disc greatest hits album released in Occasionally, radio stations will play the film's version of "Life During Wartime".
When the film was first released on home video, the songs "I Zimbra", "Big Business", and "Cities" were restored to the performance, thus forming what was dubbed as the "special edition" of the film.
In the re-release, these songs were not part of the theatrical run. Subsequent video and DVD releases have placed these after the film in an unrestored full-frame version.
Stop Making Sense was very well received by critics. This concert film is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of the genre. Leonard Maltin rated the film four stars out of four, describing it as "brilliantly conceived, shot, edited and performed" and "one of the greatest rock movies ever made.
